Okay, YA novels have pretty much saturated certain genres, e.g.:: Paranormal romance; Steampunk;: Dyspopias: Zombies; Vampires; Hot Vampires that twinkle; etc, etc.
I think we YA writers are going to have to think outside the box for new topics to grab YA readers. We could, of course, do a little cross fertilization of genres. Maybe paranormal X dystopia, or steampunk X zombies, or hot vampires X paranormal.
I prefer to write about what could actually happen without supernatural stuff involved, but that’s just me. I’ve never been much of a fantasy fan, probably because I was brainwashed getting a degree in the sciences. Still, there are a lot of cool topics (dystopias, sci-fi, mysteries) where the supernatural is unnecessary.
If anyone has great ideas for new genres for young-adult readers, let’s share them– both serious ideas or goofy ones are welcome.
